DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of press fit design and go home with your own press fit sundial! \nJoin us for an introductory class covering 3D design and laser cutting. A laser cutter is a cool tool\, but it’s even better when you know how to design the objects to cut. \nIn this two-session workshop we will work through the process of designing an object in 3D modeling software\, then making the object we’ve designed using the laser cutter. You’ll go home with a press fit sundial! \nDuring the workshop we will be using the CAD software Autodesk Fusion 360; NO prior experience with CAD is necessary. You’ll get hands-on experience on how digital design and fabrication\, and simple materials\, can be used to make something remarkable. \nThis workshop meets TWICE: Wednesday\, August 9\, 7-10 p.m. and Wednesday\, August 16\, 7-10 p.m. \nYou’ll learn:\n– an introduction to the workflow in CAD design\n– explanation of parametric control in CAD design\n– design principles for press fit\n– how to export 3D renderings to 2D files\n– how to cut 2D designs on a laser cutter \nThis workshop has only six spots available so sign up today. Join us every second Tuesday of the month from 7-9 p.m. to help with committee tasks. As of June 2016\, these include: \n\nspace fixes\, installing a sink\, doing inventory of all our new and donated equipment\, organizing to make the space more usable for all\nhelping us reinstall CiviCRM to track donations and set up class registrations\nsocial media and website updates–everything from updating plugins to editing photos and scheduling posts on Facebook and Twitter.\nTBD (there’s always work to do in a makerspace!)\n\nWe require all regular volunteers to attend a Volunteer Orientation. No RSVP is necessary for orientation or committee meetings\, and all (ages 18 and up) are welcome!

DESCRIPTION:It’s springtime\, and here in Jamaica Plain\, that means it’s time for the Wake Up the Earth festival\, an annual celebration of neighborhood people power. Organized by local nonprofit Spontaneous Celebrations\, WUTE features a parade\, food and art vendors\, and activities for all ages on the greenway south of Stony Brook T station. \nBoston Makers will be participating this year with the debut of our Microcontroller Club’s Spin Cycle! Pedal your way to a masterpiece with this bike-powered spin art machine. We supply the paint and some paper; you bring any other fabric or paper you’d like to paint on. Please help us cover the cost of paint with a suggested donation. \n

DESCRIPTION:What are monuments? What should they memorialize\, and why?  Who gets to select and place memorials? How should our communities interact with monuments? Beyond the Bust\, a panel discussion between public artists\, administrators\, and scholars\, will explore the meaning of public monuments in Boston and beyond. Moderated by Now and There’s Kate Gilbert\, Beyond the Bust will offer dialogue on monuments as artworks\, memorials\, and community identifiers. Panelists will discuss the significance of monuments as objects of public history\, collective memory\, and art. \nFeaturing Karin Goodfellow (Director of the Boston Arts Commission)\, Cher Krause Knight (Associate Professor of Art History\, Emerson College and co-founder of Public Art Dialogue)\, Lilian Hsu (Director of Public Art at Cambridge Arts and artist)\, Fern Cunningham (artist and sculptor of Step on Board\, Boston’s Harriet Tubman memorial)\, Nick Capasso (Director of the Fitchburg Art Museum) and to-be-announced artists.  Beyond the Bust is jointly presented by Big Red & Shiny and Now and There. \nThis event is free but registration is required.
